Doolough Valley Painting – Serene Irish Landscape Art

Doolough Valley – Experience the raw beauty and peaceful solitude of Doolough Valley through this original painting.  Inspired by the iconic scenery of County Mayo, Ireland, this artwork showcases the majestic mountain peaks reflected in the still waters of the lake, under the dramatic Irish sky. Using oil paint on canvas, I have tried to capture the unique atmosphere and stunning visual impact of this renowned location along the Wild Atlantic Way.  This painting is a testament to the enduring allure of the Irish landscape and a captivating addition to any art collection.

It is a most beautiful place to visit with strong connections to the Great Famine. It sits north of Killary Fjord (the only fjord in Ireland) and south of Louisburgh. We drove around the area while on holiday and unexpectedly came upon it – its quiet beauty took our breath away.

There are two lakes nestled between the rich, lush mountains along the Wild Atlantic Way. At the northern end of the valley, right next to the road, there is a cross built in memory of the victims of the “Doolough Tragedy”. During the great famine in 1849 hundreds of needy inhabitants of Louisburgh set off on foot to Delphi Lodge to seek food from the authorities there. However, they were harshly rejected. On the way back to Louisburgh, many of them died of hunger and frost in the Doolough Valley.

A quote by Mahatma Gandhi is engraved in the cross: “It has always been a mystery to me how people can feel honoured by the humiliation of their fellow human beings”
