Poolbeg Sunset

Poolbeg Sunset is a painting that holds a special place in my heart. It was born out of my countless visits to Dun Laoghaire, where I often strolled along the pier, and witnessed some of the most breathtaking sunsets. This particular artwork is a unique blend of my photographs and my artistic interpretation, carefully transferred onto canvas. I truly hope you find it captivating.

The painting pays homage to the iconic Poolbeg Chimneys, also known as The Pigeon House, which is a landmark that holds deep meaning for all Dubliners. These chimneys are among the tallest structures in Ireland, standing proudly at a towering height of 207.48 meters (680 feet 9 inches), and they grace the Dublin skyline, visible from many parts of the city. To me, the sight of these chimneys upon arriving in Dublin signifies that I am finally home.

Situated on the Poolbeg Peninsula in Ringsend, on the southern bank of Dublin Port, the Poolbeg Generating Station, where the chimneys are located, continues to function as an operational power station. While the chimneys are no longer in use for the plant’s 470MW gas turbine combined cycle facility, the station still plays a vital role in supplying electricity to over half a million homes in Dublin and beyond.

What’s truly fascinating is that the Poolbeg Chimneys have served as a backdrop for various artistic and cultural endeavors. U2 prominently featured them in their music video for “Pride (In the Name of Love),” and even Elvis Costello posed against the misty Dublin skyline, with the twin towers as a striking backdrop. This iconic symbol of Dublin’s industrial heritage continues to inspire and leave a lasting impression on me.

“Poolbeg Sunset” is my way of capturing the essence of this beloved Dublin landmark, merging the beauty of nature’s sunsets with the enduring presence of the Poolbeg Chimneys. It’s a testament to the rich history and unique charm of this extraordinary city that I hold dear.
