The Galway hooker (Irish: húicéir) is a traditional fishing boat used in Galway Bay off the west coast of Ireland. The fishermen wished to weatherproof the sails and this process is known as ‘barking the sails’.  It is the reason why Galway Hookers have their distinctive dark red or rusty brown sails.
