Day One and all the fuss and excitement of setting up. What to bring, checklists that itemise drills, screws, labels, ladders …. and the list goes on and on. Starting with a clean canvas (pardon the pun) and within no time at all, the empty shell is filled with lots of paintings and hey presto – we’re ready!

126 Artist-run Gallery, Galway is excited to be back in Donegal this year to work alongside the Artlink team to showcase the wonderful variety of work submitted by Artlink members for their annual members show.

Meitheal is a powerful concept. It’s an Irish word describing the tradition of neighbours coming together to help each other to harvest crops or save hay and was a fundamental part of life, particularly in rural areas. Building a sense of solidarity and unity in the community, this ethos of collaboration is deeply rooted in Irish culture.

Portrayed in the Arts in Ireland as a symbol of collaboration and community both Seamus Heaney and Sean Scully have depicted and celebrated the spirit of Meitheal in their work.
As artists, we often work alone. The spirit of Meitheal teaches us that by connecting and working together, we can overcome challenges. It’s a reminder of the importance of the collective effort and the possibilities that can emerge when we work together. By valuing our own identity, we can value the power of community
and collaboration, acknowledging what individuals can achieve when we unite and recognise our collective identity.

The exhibition is curated by Vanessa Jordan of the 126 Gallery Board of directors.

Rocky Terrain at Donabate Beach - Oil on Canvas.
This is a painting I have been working on from our fantastic week with @dublinpleinair.ie where lots of artists went to 7 different locations in North Co. Dublin over the week painting en plein air. Looking out over Lambay Island, I chose to paint rocks and more rocks - phew! (more difficult than I realised).
The expansive horizon offered a compelling composition. Painting by the shore, with the cool breeze and the sound of the waves, was incredibly peaceful and inspiring.

Day 7 Dublin Plein Air Festival at Ardgillen Castle. Last day of this great festival that has lasted with sunshine throughout - unbelievable - on order for next year. The beautiful grounds of Ardgillen Castle were a pleasure to wander around in. Had the enjoyable experience of doing a workshop with Blaise Smyth where we took a deep dive into golden means, geometry and such like - very engaging! Tired after the week but such fond memories to look back on. Big thanks to Paul Darcy, Theresa, Ray, Pearse and others who created this event without a hitch - fabulous organisation - we'll be back for more!

Another great day with the Dublin Plein Air Festival - day 6 at Farmleigh house. Feeling tired at this stage after 6 full days of painting and focus, being outdoors in all weathers, but can't really complain because we have had amazing weather so far. We had the extra bonus today as the William Orpen exhibition was on along with The Ceramics Exhibition for all to enjoy. Have enjoyed it all so much and chatting to all the lovely artists - just did a half day today. Getting ready now for the last day tomorrow in Ardgillen Castle.

Nestled in Connemara’s heart, this cottage is a haven that weaves together history and nature. My painting is inspired by Padraig Pearse’s legacy and the allure of Ros Muc’s hidden gem.

A Blend of Past and Present

Perched in the Connemara Gaeltacht,the cottage holds the essence of Ireland’s struggle for freedom. It was here that Padraig Pearse, leader of the 1916 rebellion against British rule, built a summer cottage for himself. Beyond its historical significance, the cottage offers a doorway to Connemara’s vibrant Gaelic culture. There is an immersive cultural experience at the visitor centre closeby where you can discover what once captivated Pearse. Delve into the region’s unique landscape and rich Gaelic heritage through interactive exhibits and local insights.

The breathtaking Connemara landscape served as Pearse’s muse, inspiring timeless poems like ‘Eoghainín na nÉan’ and ‘Íosagán.’ This same landscape, with rolling bogs and majestic mountains, inspired my painting.

Pearse’s interactions with locals resonated in his stories. These conversations created characters that came to life in his tales, fostering a deeper connection to his creative journey.

A serene walk across the bog leads to the cottage, frozen in time since 1915. Preserved with care, the cottage offers a window into Pearse’s world, a place that kindled his creativity and passion.

My canvas echoes Pearse’s reverence for Connemara’s spirit. It encapsulates history, nature, and culture, inviting you to relive the era where they seamlessly intertwined.
