Gap of Dunloe in Killarney, Co. Kerry is an oil painting measuring 16 x 12″ which aims to capture the captivating essence of this iconic view. The region holds great geological significance and is steeped in legends, making it a source of immense pride for the people of Kerry.
In the painting, I focus on the natural beauty of the Gap itself, nestled between the McGillycuddy Reeks, Ireland’s highest mountains, and the charming Purple and Tomies mountains of Killarney. The contrast between the rocky cliffs and lush vegetation adds depth to the scene, creating a serene and captivating atmosphere.
I use the interplay of light and shadows to infuse the landscape with a sense of tranquility and mystique. The warm rays of the sun gently caress the mountaintops, while the shadows create interesting patterns on the valley floor. This play of light adds a touch of magic to the painting, reflecting the enchanting stories and folklore associated with the area.
We travelled there one sunny day by the traditional pony and trap, or jaunting car, as you will see in the photos attached. This timeless mode of transport invites viewers to imagine embarking on a journey through this picturesque landscape, experiencing the beauty and charm that has fascinated generations.
Using a blend of warm earthy tones for the rural landscape with cool blues / purples for the distant mountains, sky and wild heather, I aim to depict the region’s atmosphere with a sense of admiration. The brushstrokes are expressive, capturing the ruggedness and allure of the Gap of Dunloe.
